Bringing the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) work to higher education, is Margaret Garry’s passion.
As a Project Consultant, she brings over a decade of experience with project management and people support from the higher education industry, where she has worked in Residence Life, Academic Advising, New Student Orientation, and DHSI Grants Management. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Austin, where her research focuses on the experiences and perceptions of front-line student support staff members at Hispanic Serving Institutions of Higher Education (HSIs). Margaret lives in Austin, TX with her spouse and three cats.

What’s something people don’t know about you?
I’m a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma! Halito! One of my big goals after I finish my dissertation is to take a Choctaw language class so I can say more than Halito (Hello!) and Yakoke (Thank you!).
Who were your role models growing up? How do you think that’s impacted your life now?
My grandmother was a big influence on me growing up. She took on inequitable systems when she needed to, reformed them when she had the chance, and left her community better than she found it. Though I live in a different time and my work looks different from hers, I see myself as carrying on a proud tradition of ensuring that everyone gets what they need so they can thrive.
If you could make three new laws, what would they be?
Institute Ranked Choice Voting nationwide.
Institute a national healthcare system so that all Americans can afford medical care.
Better regulate the Texas electric grid. Ensure that responsibility for things like preventative maintenance and winterization lies with energy management experts rather than a politically appointed Public Utility Commission.

I’m working on my dissertation. I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Austin.
My research focuses on the experiences and perceptions of people who work directly with students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions of higher education (HSIs).
My passion project right now is being a good pet parent and giving my cats the best life possible.
My spouse and I have adopted three cats since the start of the pandemic.
