Infrequently Asked Questions

How often do you think about the color of your skin? Why do you think that is?

I think about the color of my skin daily for a couple of reasons. First, I am very proud of being Black, especially a Black woman, as I witness the daily resilience and level of excellence demonstrated and celebrated in terms of how we live our lives, care for and serve our families and community, build and maintain strong friendships and support systems, and display our talents in our professions. Second, I am mindful of the color of my skin throughout my daily encounters as I experience and observe how people interact with me.

Do you think people can really change?

I do believe that people can change. If they are open to listening to understand, learning and unlearning, and seeking growth for themselves, they can change. I believe it is all about exercising our choices to be whomever we desire to be regardless of the expectations and pressures that are placed on us by our families, friends, workplace, and society. Change takes desire and courage.
